8th Aug: Waverley Trials - Young Ones To Watch
Published: 25 Aug 2017 - - Author: Kirsty Lawrence

"It has to stop raining one day" was the catch cry at the trials at Waverley from all present, jockeys and trainers both bemoaning the lost opportunities, all experiencing wet training and racing conditions. A track that was rated Slow 9, soon secumbed to the passing showers and downgraded to a Heavy 10, with the times declining as the track chopped out.

But spring is upon us and there were a few smart youngsters to follow from today's efforts.

Andrew Campbell has another smart 2 year old with the Spirit of Boom colt sprinting away from his rivals with Johnathan Parkes aboard.

"He jumped well, I held him together around the corner and he did it easy, that was impressive" explained Parkes. Andrew Campbell too, dared to be a little excited by this colt. "He's a lovely colt, he didn't pay much for him, but he had shown a bit at home, in saying that he hasnt had any jumpouts, so that was impressive" he said. "He will head to Wanganui, provided he comes through this run Ok" he smiled. The familiar ownership syndicate paid $40,000 for the colt from the Select sale from the Bradbury Park draft.

In the next heat Hartley also gapped his rival by eight lengths, kicking away with Hayden Tinsley aboard, the son of Azamour has plenty of upside, looking a strong three year old in the early season for Woodville trainer Neil Conners.

Bill Thurlow had a great day at the trials, and it looked to be more than home track advantage that saw him have three winners, Glory Days, May We All, and a Niagara three year old all winning their heats.
